Celts who are able to cover hundreds of miles swiftly and silently as the wind to appear in Sherwood Forest without any hint of their movements coming before them. One.ĪR’s witchy companion does a few arcane rituals - and y'all remember how much I like those - and they enlist some Celts. It is worth every moral that is gracelessly shoved down my throat. Those lines delivered from that face and with that voice are what make this film. There’s some rather cute repartee between KC and MEM, MF gets to spout forth trite wise one liners but all the best lines go to AR.

Whichever it is we get our full set by about 20/30 mins into the film. Ithinkwe meet Jimmy Gardner as a generic farmer as KC makes his way through Nottingham Castle’s courtyard but it may not be til AR’s men start burning up people’s farms. We get a training montage as they go from gentle outlaws to an army and start fighting back against AR. We meet Derek Deadman around a campfire and it’s all very cosy and happy.

KC and MF take up with the band of outlaws in Sherwood Forest after KC bests Nick Brimble in combat being a sneaky shit. Of course by the end of the film she had fallen back on screaming and needing rescuing but she had a man by then, she didn’t need her own strength****. I loved that she stood up for herself, that she fought back with words and swords and was generally awesome. The other crush I took from this was Maid Marian (not Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio though there’s nothing wrong with her). The little shriek KC gives when he sees the carnage, death and destruction and the speed with which he’s back to his normal delivery cracks me up every time. There’s shouting and snark and derring do then KC gets back to the ruin of his former home. KC and MF complete this journey of hundreds and hundreds of miles in a few minutes (they clearly have their seven league boots on) with some backstory building dialogue to entertain them and immediately start righting wrongs when they come across a band of AR’s men doing nefarious deeds.

The audience needed to know they were in England so they damn well got some English landmarks. Hadrian’s Wall, for those who don’t know, was built to separate England and Scotland and is therefore in the far north of England. They walk for a short while and then dance around on Hadrian’s Wall. They land by white cliffs which we sort of assume are Dover though it’s actually Seven Sisters in East Sussex, either way it’s the south coast. The geography is completely baffling in these first scenes. I may also be able to quote large amounts of the dialogue verbatim. The opening scene with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman escaping from their captors makes me cheer, Brian Blessed makes me cheer just by existing and then Alan Rickman unmasks looking superior, evil and slightly unhinged and I cheer a bit more. I sat watching it with lots of internal, okay and external, cringing at just how cheesy andHollywoodit all was and I was still absolutely loving it. That (and the overly loud and leading soundtrack) aside I do love this film. Oh Hollywood how I love loathe am endlessly annoyed by your obvious storytelling, overused tropes and belief in the stupidity of your audience. This is a classic retelling of the legend of Robin Hood done how it should be with lots of American actors***, explosions, obvious dialogue and blatant signposting of any and all plot devices. They ARE HPAs though so it totally counts. The other two HPAs have small roles in HP and their roles in this aren’t much either Derek Deadman has a minor speaking role in this and Jimmy Gardner is a miscellaneous extra. Who’s Who in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves*:įirst things first this film is on the list because it is the film that kick started my love not only of Alan Rickman (Yay! Alan Rickman! Woo! Alan Rickman!**) but also of Christian Slater.
